David Martin Young

David Martin Young, also known as “Dave”, “Navy Davey”, “Daddy David” to his kids, and “Grandpop”, “Peepaw / Old man”, “Opa” to the grandkids. After struggling with heart complications for almost two months at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City, he spent his last month showing so much improvement under hospice care spending his time in the comfort of his homestead hobby farm, Young’s Haven, surrounded by family. The Lord called him home, on Friday, August 2nd, 2024, at the ripe ole’ age of 76. A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 10, 2024, at United Church of Christ in Tipton, Iowa with a luncheon following the service. Burial will follow the luncheon and be at Rochester Cemetery with a VFW Honor Guard services.

Dave was born on August 6, 1947, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, IA to Martin James Young and Evelyn Edna (Moeller) (Young) Sterner.  Dave grew up on the farm for several years. He graduated from Tipton High School in 1966 while working at Black Hawk Foundry. From 1966-1970 he served in the Navy during the Vietnam War, He served on the Tom Green County Ship for one year as a gunner’s mate, then on the USS White River as a E3 boatswains mate on a landing craft the last two years in Vietnam, then was in the Army Reserves for over a year.

After Dave's service, he worked alongside his father at the gas station, Moore Business forms, Tidewater as a printer operator, cost accounting, CDS, Kemmanns Chevrolet, Family Foods, Rockwell Collins, and retired from the VA Medical Center after working in the mailroom for twelve years. He enjoyed being behind the wheel at Demo Derbie's, serving fourteen years as a volunteer Firefighter in Tipton, continuously working on remodeling projects in his home, spending time with family and friends at Ev N’ Dale Resort in Hagensick, MN., Highway Garden dances with his wife, Nascar races, fishing, camping, watching Star Trek, movies and topped off his night with a Bowl of ice cream.

He is survived by his wife of thirty-nine years, Faye Ellen (Elder) Young; his former wife, Nancy (Cook) Koerner; children, Brett Young of Florida, Amy (Daniel) Lusche of Iowa City, Bridgette (Jon) Petty-Hatfield of Iowa City, and Leah (Rob) Ritter of Swisher; stepchildren, Stacy Hummer of LaGrange Georgia, Ryan Dewulf of Valley Alabama; twelve grandchildren, two great grandchildren. 

Dave is preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings, Cindy, Jerry, and Tim.
