Janette W. Weil

Janette, 68, passed away peacefully at home after a lengthy illness on the evening of 09 May 2023 with her family by her side. She has been cremated as per her wishes. Interment will be at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, at a future date when her husband joins her.  Meanwhile, she will reside in a place of honor and respect at home.

Janette was born at Merryfield Hospital in Dundee, Scotland, to George Christison Edward, and Edith Gruar (Hutchison) Edward on 10 January 1955. She spent her early years in Dundee, then the family moved to Montrose, when she was in her mid-teens. Janette worked at Cadburys in Montrose, as a production intake clerk.

In 1981, she met Pat Weil, a US Navy Seabee who was stationed at RAF Edzell, near Montrose. They got married 05 August 1983, in Laurencekirk, Scotland. They made their home at East Muriton, Luthermuir. In May 1984, they had a son, Johnathan, born at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee. In April 1985, the Navy transferred them to Little Creek, VA. In December 1985, they transferred to Naval Station, Roosevelt Roads in Puerto Rico. While there, they had another son, Martin, born in March 1986 at the base hospital onboard Roosevelt Roads. Then in January 1989, they transferred to Naval Air Station, Oceana VA, where they remained until her husband retired after 20 years active duty with the US Navy Seabees, in September 1992.

After retirement, they relocated to her husband’s hometown of Adel. Janette continued to raise their kids, worked in the school lunch program, then worked at Daugherty’s SuperValu. In 1995, she found her dream job, she started her Home Daycare, which continued for 25+ years, until her retirement in 2021. Janette had 100+ kids over the years, many of whom were from the same family. “Her kids” usually started in diapers and remained until they started school. She has kept in touch with most of the parents, some of the kids have graduated High School, College, and even gotten married and have kids of their own. Janette is proud of each and every one of them and was honored to be trusted with their care.

Janette became a Naturalized US Citizen on 06 August 1999. She loved spending time with her kids and grandkids. She was preceded in death by both her parents in Scotland, her brother George Edward in Birmingham, England, and survived by her sister-in-law, Bridie Edward, in Birmingham, her husband Pat Weil, son Johnathan (Amanda) Weil, son Martin (Adriana) Weil, and grandkids Hayden, Leigha, Jamison, and Emmett, all of Adel.

A memorial gathering will be held at St. John’s Catholic Church Parish Hall in Adel, between 1700-1900, (5PM-7PM) on Thursday 18 May 2023. Conversations, stories, jokes, whatever. It’s just a time to remember Janette. No flowers please. Any donations can be made to any charity of your choice.
