Lester L. Maudlin
Lester L Maudlin, age 82 of Norwalk, Iowa, passed away June 10, 2023. Les as he was known by many was born August 15, 1940, to Ralph and Mildred (Busby) Maudlin. After graduating from Lacey High School in 1958, he served in the United States Navy on the USS Belle Grove LSD 2 from 1958 to 1961. After returning from the Navy, he married Janet Tice from Searsboro, IA on November 22, 1962. Les worked for a few years in the construction industry before he and Janet moved to Norwalk in 1970, when he started working for a national trucking company in the Des Moines area where he established many life-long friendships.
Some of Les’ favorite things to do included camping, boating, skiing, fishing, and hunting. He enjoyed meeting up with his buddies (“the rusty zipper club”) at the local McDonalds. One of his greatest joys was watching his grandkids play sports. He and Janet never missed a game. He really cherished the annual USS Belle Grove LSD 2 and Epping Forest Navy ship reunions with his buddies and rehashing many stories.
Les will be missed by his wife Janet of 60 years as well as his children Lori (James) Oviatt of Carnation WA, Mark and (Alisha Bogle) of Kansas City, KS, and Dana (Jeff) Frey of West Des Moines, IA, his five grandchildren Whitney (Darren) Chapman, Cameron (Taylor) Oviatt, Coleman Oviatt (Colin Taylor), Grant Frey (Shelbe Schlag) and Carter Frey and four great grandchildren. Les will also be missed by his two brothers Lyle Maudlin of Fairfield, IA, and Larry (Dixie) Maudlin of Fremont, IA, several nieces, and nephews, and was preceded in death by his parents. He will be greatly missed by his many friends and family.
Les will be interned at the Iowa Veteran’s cemetery, Van Meter, IA. A Celebration of Life is scheduled at The Wright Place, from 11-1 on Saturday, August 12, 2023, in Norwalk, Iowa.
