Obituary for Donald Lee Hines

On Sunday, June 25th, 2023, Donald Lee Hines loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend passed away under hospice care at the age of 84. Son of Herbert and Dorothy (Doud) Hines, Don was born at home on June 30th, 1938, in his hometown of What Cheer, Iowa.

At an early age Don enlisted in the Army, while on leave he met the love of his life Shirley Ann Myers. They were married on December 13th, 1956, and raised six children together: Kim, Tom, Stan, Glenn, Pat, and John. 

Don and Shirley later moved to the country, outside of Guttenberg, Iowa next to the Mississippi River. It was there he built a place he could call home for his family. Don had various careers over his lifetime, he retired from Local 234 as an operator after 20 plus years. When he was not working, he found joy in sharing his passion and love of the outdoors and the Mississippi River with his family. Don’s true passion was trout and walleye fishing. Don loved his children, but it can be said by many that he truly lit up when he was able to spend time with his grandchildren. 

Don was preceded in death by his sons Tom and Pat Hines, his younger brother Mike Hines, a baby sister Gertrude Hines, his mother Dorothy Hines, and father Herbert Hines. He is survived by his loving wife Shirley Hines, daughter Kim (Robert) Ludovissy Jr, son Stan Hines, son Glenn (Linda) Hines, son John (Christine) Hines, daughter in law Donna Hines, daughter in law Monica Hines, brother Larry (Pat) Hines, sister Rosey (Don) Sieck-Miller, brother Terry Hines, sister Sandy (Wes) Bender, 12 grandchildren Tabatha, Andy, April, Mike, Matt, Summer, Adam, Sydney, Noelle, Dakota, Jordan, Ashely, 19 greatgrandchildren, several nieces and nephews. 

A memorial will be held at the Promise Land Winery 39053 Great River Rd, Guttenberg, IA on August 4rd, 2023, from 12:00 – 3:00 p.m.
