David A. Smitherman
David A. Smitherman, 88, of Clive passed away peacefully on Monday, June 5th, 2023. He was surrounded by family at the Everystep Kavanaugh House in Des Moines, Iowa.
David was born March 18th, 1935, in Union, Iowa, the son of Brad and Jessie Smitherman. After finishing high school, David went to Upper Iowa University for a year and then volunteered for the United States Army. He was stationed in South Korea, and during a visit home David eloped with Patricia Krominga. David returned home after finishing his service overseas and finished his bachelor’s degree in teaching. David’s teaching career lasted many years and he taught at numerous schools while also coaching girls and boys sports. David left teaching to work for Pfizer Pharmaceutical company until 1974. He then became a lobbyist for the American Petroleum Counsel. After retiring in 2007, he continued his passion and opened Smitherman Consulting.
David married Sandy Smitherman in January of 1992 in Des Moines, Iowa. They had a lot in common, which included being lobbyists and golfers. The two enjoyed traveling, they traveled to Florida every year together and had an 8-person traveling group they enjoyed traveling with. David was an avid golfer and a member of Echo Valley Country Club. He also enjoyed several fishing adventures with friends and family.
David was preceded in death by his parents Brad and Jesse, his first wife Patricia, and their four daughters Tracy, Terri, Linda, and Kim Smitherman. David was also preceded in death by two siblings, Sandy, and Clyde.
David is survived by his wife Sandy, his sister Phyllis, his brother Joel, and his grandchildren Kristy, Ben, Michael, Amelia, and Ashley. As well as numerous great and great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of David’s life will be held on June 17th, 2023, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at Echo Valley Country Club, with memory sharing at 3pm.
