James “Jim” George Boyer

James “Jim” George Boyer, 72, passed away Monday, July 3rd, 2023, due to many years of complications caused by Agent Orange poisoning. Jim was born on July 17th, 1950, in Blackhawk County, Iowa to parents Delmar Boyer and Emily (Hanna) Frost. Jim grew up in Cedar Falls, Iowa with his family, where he could usually be found outdoors with his brothers.

In November of 1967, at age 17, Jim enlisted in the United States Marine Corps with his good friend in the “buddy plan,” Jerry Rasmussen. During his four years with the Corps, Jim learned to weld and later worked on helicopters while stationed in Vietnam. Upon his return to Iowa, he served with the national guard for two years. He was very proud of his time served. Just months before Jim’s USMC discharge, he married Marlys (Williams) Moore on May 14th, 1971. The couple welcomed two children throughout their nine-year marriage.

Jim went on to work as a welder for many years. Upon retiring, he purchased property outside of Aredale, Iowa which he then fixed up with his son. The two of them enjoyed renovating their home “The Ranch” and were often accompanied by their loyal dog, Jake. Jim’s hobbies included fishing, camping, kayaking, and bird watching. He also enjoyed cooking and serving his family unique new recipes, the weirder the better! He was an avid collector of guns and various defensive equipment. Jim couldn’t leave home without a Yeti cup full of ice-cold Diet Pepsi and, of course, a bendy straw.

Jim is preceded in death by his son, Guy Boyer, who passed away February 19, 2023; parents, Delmar Boyer and Emily Frost; stepfather, Dale Frost and sister, Darlene Brocka. He is survived by his daughter, Shenita (Tim) Barnes of Fairbank; brothers, Larry and Greg Boyer of Cedar Falls; sisters, Michelle (Frost) Bisbee and Marcy Frost of Hudson and Jan Guzman of Waterloo; grandchildren, Brandon Boyer of Waterloo, Corbin Barnes of Cedar Falls, and Emma Barnes of Fairbank. Along with various loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

A graveside service will be held at 2 o’clock on Monday, July 17th, 2023 at Fairbank Cemetery for both Jim and Guy. Coffee and dessert to follow at the Fairbank American Legion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim’s memory to Toys for Tots- a charity he supported for many years- or directed to the family.
