Richard “Rick” Lawrence Van Winkle

Richard “Rick” Lawrence Van Winkle of Mediapolis, Iowa passed away  in the presence of family on Saturday, February 25th, 2023 from cancer. 

Rick was born on December 19th, 1954  to Lawrence William Van Winkle and Martha Jane (Sites) Van Winkle in Carthage, Illinois. 

Rick attended Mt Pleasant Schools and graduated in 1973. 

On July 2nd, 1977, Rick married the love of his life, Patti Sue Willson in Pleasant Grove, Iowa. 
In 1979, Rick and Patti welcomed their first born son Dustin Richard followed by their second son Devin Willson in 1982. 

Rick was known for his hard work to provide for his family and his quick wit. 

Over the years, Rick worked many jobs. He owned Rick’s Full Service as a mechanic and drove trucks for agricultural chemical companies. His most rewarding responsibility was loving his five grandchildren, Alexis, Ehren, Kendall, Ellah and Aiden whom he loved beyond measure. 

Rick enjoyed fishing, hunting, cooking, NASCAR,  the Iowa Hawkeyes, and all sports but most of all spending time with his boys and grandchildren. 

Rick was a volunteer firefighter for the Mediapolis Fire Department for 29 years. 

Rick is survived by his wife of 45 years, Patti; his beloved sons  Dustin (Heidi) and Devin 
(Brooke); his grandchildren, Alexis, Ehren, Kendall, Ellah and Aiden;  brothers, Nick (Sarah) and Mike (Leanne) and brother-in-law, Robert Douglas Clay; and many nieces and nephews. 

Rick was preceded in death by both parents; brother Mark; In-laws, Grover  and Elnora Vandermark Willson; sister-in-law, Karen Willson Clay; brother-in-law Terry Gene Willson. 

A celebration of life will be held March 4th, 2023 at  3:00 pm at the Mediapolis Fire Department. Family will receive friends from 1:00—3:00. Memorials may be made to the Mediapolis Fire Department.
