John “Jack” Levi Hagensick

John “Jack” Levi Hagensick age 89 of Waukon, IA, passed away at home after a short battle with cancer on Wednesday, February 8th, 2023.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 17th, 2023, at the Zion Lutheran Church, 117 W Greene Street in Castalia, IA. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service on Friday at the church.

Jack was the only child born to Joseph and Lois (Bacon) Hagensick in Waukon, IA on June 21st, 1933. Jack went to school in Waterville, IA through the 8th grade. They then moved to Castalia, IA where Jack started farming with his dad. This is where he met the love of his life, Sally Schultz, who lived just a mile down the road. Jack married Sally on December 27th, 1953.  They farmed in Castalia until 1965 when they purchased their own farm in Glenwood Township. There they raised their five children.

Jack farmed for 34 years and won numerous awards during that time. Some years he farmed 1,000 acres with four row equipment, while also milking cows and raising pigs, all with the help of his family.

In 1999 they moved to the log cabin that Sally’s parents had built at Walden Pond. This is where he enjoyed being semi-retired from farming by mowing lawn, making maple syrup every Spring, and making numerous crafts for the family. In 2014, they moved to their condo in Waukon where he enjoyed full retirement.

In later years, when not so busy farming, he took up going to NASCAR races where he was a big fan of Dick Trickle and Mark Martin. If he couldn’t be at the races in person, you would often find him watching them on T.V.  He enjoyed deer hunting with his sons and grandsons and brought home quite a few trophy deer. He thoroughly enjoyed playing cards and spent several hours of his life playing with great friends and family, but most of all trying to beat Sally.  Above all he loved spending time with his family and his wonderful sense of humor will be greatly missed.

Jack is survived by his wife, Sally, of Waukon, IA; Children, Rick (Charlene) Hagensick of Waukon, IA, Barb (Rick) Schares of Readlyn, IA, Brenda (Dave) McConnell of Decorah, IA, and Rusty (friend, Sue Kratz) Hagensick of Lansing, IA; 15 Grandchildren, Travis (Sarah) Hagensick, Cory (Kelly) Hagensick, Shane Hagensick, Angie (Dustin) Moulds, Troy (Kristie) Hagensick, Regan (Tara) McConnell, Tanya (Keith) Brunscheon, Callie (Nick) Hrubes, Michael (Brayanne) Hagensick, Devin (Heather) Berger, Sara (Zach) Bulman, E.J.
