William “Bill” Mason

William “Bill” Mason, 80, of Grinnell, passed away on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at his home, with his wife Sheryl by his side. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on May 25th, 2024 at Chester Township Cemetery, 35th Street, Grinnell, IA 50112.

Bill Mason was born November 28, 1943 to Robert and Berniece Wilson Mason in Clinton, Iowa.  He grew up on the family farm.  After attending several country schools, managed to graduate from Grinnell Newburg High School with the Class of 1962.  Bill served his country in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge in 1968.  Bill worked many years in the construction trades.  Starting by working alongside his dad.  In 1975, he started his own roofing business.  In 2008, he went to work at AHRENS park in Grinnell, a job he truly enjoyed, working for the Gosselink boys!

Bill and Sheryl met in 1981 and were married in 1987.  They loved the farm so much; they were married in the kitchen of the ol’ farm house.  They lived on the family farm for many years, loving the summers and cussing the winters!

Bill was a PUFL (paid up for life) member of the Newburg American Legion Post 640, with 55 years continuous membership.  A member of VOITURE 568 Marshalltown Iowa 40-8.

Bill enjoyed spending time with family and friends, going to country music concerts with Sheryl, trying to grow tomatoes, relaxing on the front porch after a good days work with a cold beer.

Bill is survived by his wife Sheryl; daughter, Shara and her husband Brian; 3 grandkids, Austin, Shaley, and Spencer; and great grandson, Taz.

Preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; brother, Tom; and many close friends.

Bill always said, “if the only thing anyone could say about him is, he was a hard worker and his word was good, that would be enough.”
