Winifred Nell Scott

Winifred Nell “Freddie” Murray Scott, 94, passed away on October 20, 2022, after two months of declining health.  She was born to Charlie Hall Murray and Pauline Mitchell Murray on April 1, 1928. She was a cheerful, spunky girl digging bunkers in neighborhood vacant lots and taking tap dancing lessons. She loved going to the circus with her father. She moved with her family to Woodburn, Kentucky, in 1937. While there, at age nine, she gave her life to faith in Jesus Christ. Her family returned to Detroit where she attended high school. She went on picnics with her friends and took the bus downtown to the Detroit Vernors soda pop factory where new flavors could be sampled for a nickel.  She attended Taylor University when only one in ten women went to college. She graduated in 1951 with a degree in Home Economics and English Education. She married her college sweetheart, Paul Scott, on June 1, 1951. They moved to Ohio, where Paul began a career with Procter and Gamble. In 1962, they moved to Iowa City, Iowa, with their four daughters. Freddie was an excellent seamstress and made everything from her own wedding dress to wedding dresses for the girls, with many amazing dresses and coats in between. She collected antiques and frequented garage sales where she was not afraid to negotiate. She went through different cooking phases (layered hash browns, pesto, and homemade pasta to name a few). Friends, colleagues, neighbors, kids, and others were welcome at the Scott table.  Freddie began attending Christian Women’s Club and persuaded Paul to attend a Bible Study in 1968 that redefined their life. Their love of people and their love of the Lord brought opportunities for many lifelong friendships and a legacy of service. Their greatest accomplishments included helping to start the Iowa City Bible Fellowship in 1974 and Hillside Christian School in 1981. Their faith continues with their daughters and their families.

Survivors include four daughters: Chris Scott of Racine, Wisconsin; Suzanne (Doug) Oelschlaeger of Cedar Rapids; Paula Lynch; and Becky (Kevin) Hasler all of Iowa City. She had eight grandchildren: David (Melanie) Lynch, Noelle (Vince) Zanotti; Mattie (Patrick) Herbst; Rachel (Michael) Pagel; Charlotte Oelschlaeger, Will (Becca) Oelschlaeger; Griffin (Leah) Hasler, and Mitchell Hasler. Freddie was a prayer warrior for her children, grandchildren, and thirteen great grandchildren: Scottie, Spencer, and Lucy Lynch; Alex, Ivy, and Violet Zanotti; Alo, Eliana, and Hazel Herbst; George and Olive Pagel; and Wulf and Felix Oelschlaeger. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Jean Scott Chambers; and a niece, Lynn Grey (Paul Tade) and their children Allison and Miles Tade.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; son-in-law, Bill Lynch; granddaughter, Emily Lynch; sister, Harriet Hulett; nephew, Craig Grey; and brother-in-law, Richard Scott.

There will be a celebration of her life at The River Community Church, 3001 Muscatine Ave, Iowa City, on October 30, 2022. There will be a visitation at 1 PM and a service at 2 PM, followed by a time of fellowship.

Any memorials may be made to Hillside Christian School, 1250 12th Avenue, Coralville, Iowa, 52241.
