Alfred A. Anthes
Alfred A. Anthes was born on October 13, 1929, to Jacob and Opal Cole - Anthes in Sumner, Washington. The Great Depression moved the family back to Iowa in 1932. Alfred, in his childhood years, experienced the challenges of a tenant farm family. In the first eight years of schooling Alfred attended five different schools. Alfred also attended three high schools in four years and graduated from Olin High School in 1947. After high school Alfred worked with various farmers and also in a machine shop in Cedar Rapids.
In 1950 Alfred went back to Washington State. While in Washington he served as an electrician apprentice. In 1951 he was drafted into the Army and was stationed two years in Alaska. In 1953 he returned to Iowa and went into farming with his father east of Strawberry Point. His father was killed in a farm accident in 1956. Alfred continued in the farm operation.
1957 was a pivotal year for this young farmer. In the spring of that year, after hearing the Gospel proclaimed, Alfred gave his heart and life to the Lord Jesus Christ. Alfred has always declared this to be the most crucial decision of his life. He was welcomed into a church family that same year, what is now the Edgewood Bible Church, Edgewood, Iowa. He soon met a member of that church, Dorothy Elliot, and they were married on December 27, 1957.
After marriage, the couple continued farming at Strawberry Point and later moved to rural Edgewood. John, David, Steven, and Mary Kay were all born while engaged in farming at Edgewood.
In the spring of 1964 Alfred quit dairy farming and moved to Grundy Center, Iowa. Alfred founded what would eventually become A&D Refrigeration, serving central and northeast Iowa in commercial refrigeration and repair. The expanding business added a partnership when Dean and Joyce Maddux joined the business, thus A & D (Alfred and Dean). Alfred and Dorothy moved the family to Parkersburg Iowa in 1972 to better serve the northern region of the business. The family expanded soon after that move and two young girls, Linda, and Karen, were added to the family. Alfred and the entire family greatly appreciate the ministry of Calvary Baptist Church, Parkersburg, Iowa during the years the family was there. Alfred was very active at CBC.
Alfred was passionate in the Word of God right after his conversion. He prepared himself for church service. He has been active in church leadership throughout much of his adult years. Alfred has always had a passion for missions and was blessed to participate and serve as one of the pioneers in occupational short-term mission to Ecuador South America in 1970. He built a walk-in cooler in the middle of the Ecuadorian jungle which would serve tribal members engaged in raising livestock. This was another pivotal point in Alfred’s life.
Alfred retired from refrigeration in 1999 and he and Dorothy moved back to the Edgewood - Strawberry Point area and joined the church where they had so many rich memories.
Alfred went home to be with His Lord on November 1, 2022. Called to glory, Alfred leaves behind, his wife of 64 years, Dorothy; five children, John (Bev) Anthes, Dave (Kristy) Anthes, Steven (Janet) Anthes, Mary Kay (Charles) Baumgardner, and Karen (Blue) Boyer; 17 grandchildren Valerie (Bradley) Larpenteur, Christine (Dominic) Wiley, Katherine Anthes, Asher (Kira) Anthes, Mira Anthes, Levi (Whitney) Anthes, Isaac (Joanna) Anthes, Michael (Sonya) Anthes, Brittany (Steven) Malloch, Joel (Haley) Anthes, Sarah Baumgardner, Kristin (Daniel) Benedict, Andrew (Jennifer) Baumgardner, Rachel Baumgardner, Jeremiah Romo, Jonathan Romo, Camden Boyer and 14 great grandchildren Julia Larpenteur, William Larpenteur, Sawyer Anthes, Lincoln Anthes, Hudson Anthes, Easton Anthes, Belle Anthes, Elliot Anthes, Stella Anthes, Ezekiel Anthes, Yaara Malloch, Madelyn Baumgardner, Emaleigh Baumgardner, Caleb Baumgardner.
