Mary Jeanette Cooke

M. Jeanette (Leonard) Cooke, 82, the daughter of John and Bernette Leonard was born November 6, 1939, in Emmetsburg, Iowa and departed this life on Thursday, March 31, 2022 at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly, Iowa.

She received her education from Emmetsburg Catholic Schools graduating in 1958. On September 9, 1961 she was united in marriage to Kennith Cooke in Emmetsburg, Iowa. They settled in Manchester, Iowa where they raised their four children. Jeanette enjoyed traveling in their RV, wintering in Texas and Arizona, and spending time with her family. She loved watching westerns and the EWTN channel. Passions of hers included drawing horses, crafting with flowers, and love for nature, hummingbirds, and butterflies. Anyone who knew her, knew she had a kind heart and an Irish wit. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a devoted mother and grandmother.

Surviving is her husband, Ken Cooke; her four children, Danny (Carmen) Cooke of Strawberry Point; Kelly (Dan) Streicher of Waverly; Randy (Krista) Cooke of Cheyenne, Wyoming; and John (Julie) Cooke of Ryan; her eleven grandchildren, Kyle Cooke; Ashley (Scott) Hill; Angel (Sidney) McNulty; Casey (Kassie) Cooke; Justin (Jenna) Cooke; Cody (Mandy) Cooke; Alisha Cooke; Morgan (Eric) Ackerson; Keshia Cooke (Austin); Taylor  (Brody) Weston; Kayla Cooke (Ryan); eleven great-grandchildren; four brothers and one sister, Pat (Jo Ann) of Aurora, Colorado; Tom (Sue) Leonard of Emmetsburg; Gary (Sandy) Leonard of Emmetsburg; Mike Leonard and special friend Jennifer Sanderson of Spencer; Deb (Rick) Rouse of Emmetsburg; a brother-in-law, Delbert Petersen; and also many nieces and nephews.

Jeanette was proceeded in death by her parents, John and Bernette Leonard, and her sister Shirley.

Visitation will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly Iowa, Monday, April 4th, 2022, from 10 to 11am with service to follow.

A special thank you to the caregivers and staff at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community for the love and care that they provided for Jeanette while she was there and to Cedar Valley Hospice for their compassion.
