Gary Wayne Petty

Gary Wayne Petty of West Point, IA, formerly of Keokuk, passed away at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa on Monday, January 3, 2022, at the age of 77. He was born July 1, 1944 in Keokuk Iowa, the son of Glen and Berniece Petty. He graduated from Keokuk Senior High School in 1964. He was united in marriage to Beverly Engle on February 2, 1970 in Keokuk, Iowa. She preceded him in death.  On November 4, 1981 he married Connie Senn in Keokuk, Iowa. She survives.

Throughout most of his life, he was self-employed; repairing and restoring furniture and he assisted with restoration work for the South Lee County district court facilities.  He was a stained glass artisan designing and making windows and also restored windows in several area churches throughout the years.  He always said he was born with "wheels on his feet" and traveled the country selling antiques and neat junque at various antique shows and flea markets.

He enjoyed races of all kinds, especially NHRA drag racing.  He was an avid gardener and was known as "Mr. Tomato" for the tomatoes he harvested at the Petty Preserve, where all birds, bees, and butterflies could always find nourishment.  He loved spending time with family and friends at Spring Island Camp. He was a lifetime member of the Southside Boat Club where he enjoyed visiting with friends and supporting the club.

Gary is survived by his wife, Connie, of West Point; his daughter, Uda Kensett (Tony) of West Point, his son, Jesse Petty, of Burlington; grandsons, Colten (Erinne) Kensett, of Sheffield, Ia, Taylor Kensett of West Point, great grandchildren, Everlee and Carter Kensett,.  He is also survived by 4 nephews and 2 nieces, many great nieces and nephews, cousins and in-laws, and his beloved dog, Sweet Pea (Petey).

There will be a Celebration of Gary's life at later date at the Southside Boat Club. Memorials may be directed to SE Iowa Regional Hospice, 5409 Ave. O, Ft. Madison, IA 52627 or PAW Animal Shelter, 2031 48th St., Ft. Madison, IA 52627.
Cremation has been entrusted to Iowa Cremation, Cedar Rapids, IA.
