Mary Susan Weimer

Mary Weimer, 78, died peacefully in her sleep on February 1 in her hometown of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  Mary graduated from Washington Senior High in Cedar Rapids and went on to earn her B.S. and elementary teaching certificate.  After college, she moved to the Lansing, Michigan area and taught third grade, incorporating many advanced concepts into her classrooms.  During that time, she earned a Ph.D in philosophy, became an ordained minister, and obtained a Master’s degree in social work. She later served as a school social worker in central Michigan where she taught seminars for teachers on methods to work with difficult students.  She was a strong advocate for the students with whom she worked, many having been identified as suffering from behavioral or mental health issues. She frequently challenged administrators on the best course of action to assist those students.

Mary remained in the Lansing area for several years after retirement before returning to Cedar Rapids to live in a retirement home, accompanied by her faithful companion, Buttercup the cat.

Mary is survived by a younger brother, two nephews and their spouses, a niece, three great-nephews, several cousins, and remaining close friends.

If you wish to remember Mary, you are invited to take some action in defense of our environment and of public education, causes which were important to her.

“May she rest in peace and tranquility, free of the illnesses that plagued her in life. She is loved and will reside in our memories.”
