JoAnn Shirley Shoemaker
JoAnn Shirley Shoemaker was a fighter. At 83 years old, she passed away at home in Fairfield Iowa with her loving children by her side. In her short battle with terminal cancer, she warmed the hearts of her hospice team with her strength and endurance. Her battle ended peacefully on February 25th 2022.
Born To Cornelius and Grace (Zylstra) Verdoorn in Ashton, Iowa on March 24rd 1938, she married Darrell Shoemaker in September of 1955. The couple settled in Birmingham, Iowa had three boys and one girl.
JoAnn played piano and guitar and was an integral part of a Birmingham, Iowa production of A Take Off on Hee Haw which included comedy skits and musical performances from local talent in order to raise money to construct a new baseball diamond on the east side of town. JoAnn also worked for Duke’s Yamaha and managed Sorden Music in Fairfield for many years making countless friends in the community. She was also a transport driver for the Southeast Iowa Area Crime Commission (S.I.A.C.C) for several years.
JoAnn leaves behind her children, Slade of Fairfield, IA, Drew (Rindi) of Springfield, Mo, Kent of Phoenix, Arizona and Sheila (Steve) Pool of Fairfield, Iowa as well as grandchildren, Danen (Danielle) Pool of Ames, Iowa, Elise Shoemaker of Bolivar, Missouri, Kyle (Kellsi) Shoemaker of Bolivar, Missouri and Christy Shoemaker of Bolivar, Missouri as well as great grandchildren Layla Pool of Ames, Iowa, Jamison Shoemaker and Brienne Shoemaker of Bolivar Missouri.
Per JoAnn’s wishes her body has been cremated and no services will be held. Her children will schedule a celebration of life later in the spring.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Jack and Joey Verdoorn and two sisters Elsie (Alvin) Reinke and Pearl (Lawrence) Baerenwald.
