Tom's brother Steve and I were best friends in high school and at Iowa State. I first met Tom in late 1972 after he enrolled as a graduate student. Tom and Steve commuted from Ames to Hawkeye on most weekends to work on the farm. I was lucky to be able to share the ride back and forth with them for 4 years. After I graduated I visited them both while they were in graduate school. Tom was always friendly and supportive and encouraged me to take a great job in Texas. Steve and Tom were wonderful men and I will miss them both and think fondly of them always.

Sonya and family, Beautiful photo of Tom; exactly the way I knew him!! Sonya, what a beautiful obituary you wrote about Tom's life! What a life he lived. I didn't know about the agent orange side effects he/others have suffered since Vietnam. So glad you showed "NO FLOWERS". Glad you specified "No flowers please. Memorials can be made to ISU Foundation 4-H scholarship fund for the Thomas S. Colvin Agricultural Engineer scholarship that is established there. Family can also do that for you. That is Tom again and how he would have approved of donations going to his passion. He was so intelligent. I was always impressed by the good questions he asked at our diabetes group support meetings!! Tom, RIP. Another meaning I learned last year was return if possible. May God comfort you all now and in the days, months, and years ahead. Betty Gordon, Ames
