Maureen Shaner, age 71 of Sumner, IA, died on Sunday, August 28, 2022, at Hillcrest Living Campus in Sumner, IA from cancer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, September 15, 2022, at Immaculate Conception Church, 404 W. 1st St., Sumner, IA 50674. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to Mass. A private family burial will be held at a later time.
Maureen was born May 11, 1951, to Maurice Elliott and Kathleen (Schrage) Elliott Cohn in Cocoa, FL where her father was in the USAF at Cape Canaveral. She lived in several places as a child, including, Cocoa, FL, Mason City, Ft. Atkinson, and Postville, IA. On June 24, 1972, she was united in marriage to John Shaner, they later divorced. Maureen made Sumner, IA her home throughout her adult life. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, and taking care of cats and kittens. She was often known to take in stray cats and became a safe haven for farel cats. In July 2017, Maureen’s home was flooded when Sumner received 12 inches of rain. She lost several of her beloved cats, her home and most of her possessions in the flood. For a short time following, she lived in Tripoli, IA but soon returned to Sumner, IA, her beloved hometown.
Maureen is survived by her daughter, Carolyn (Dave) Wagner of Audobon, IA. Grandchildren Heath (Megan) Wagner, Matracea (Jonah Bell) Wagner, and Cami Wagner; two great grandchildren, Annistyn Wagner, and Malakai Bell; mother, Kathleen (Schrage) Elliott Cohn, Denver, IA; brothers Daniel Elliott and John Elliott both of Postville, IA and sisters Vickie Burington, Fayette, IA and Angela (Jeff) Lund, Waterloo, IA; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Maurice Elliott, sister, Denise Liddle, sister-in-law, Lynn Elliott, nephew, Nickolas Elliott.
The family would like to express a special thank you to the Sumner Community, her many friends and caregivers.
Memorial donations in Maureen’s honor may be directed to the family for future designation.
