Besides spending time with his family, Curly enjoyed camping with the Creston Cozy Campers, league bowling, playing cards, traveling, cruises, refurbishing bicycles, tinkering in his workshop, and emailing jokes to family and friends. He was active in the Fraternal Order of Eagles where he served as Chaplain and President. Curly and Phyllis retired to Apache Junction, AZ, where they lived for more than 20 years until relocating back to Iowa (Des Moines) in 2017.

Curly is survived by his wife, Phyllis; their three daughters, Cindy Hindes of Middleton, WI, Sherri (Rod) Smith of Atchison, KS, and Becky (Ray) Kingery of Creston, IA; two grandchildren, Amber (Chad) Rutherford of West Des Moines, IA, and Cooper (Angie) Smith of Ankeny, IA; and three great grandchildren, Ridge and Ryder Rutherford and Joanna Smith, along with a second Smith baby due in the fall.
