Dr. Stefan August Loening

I was a resident in the Urology Department, Iowa City from 1983 to 1987. In those years Dr. Loening was a very intellectual and devoted teacher. With his patient but steady guidance,he imparted confidence with his repetitive “cut, cut, cut”, when he noticed hesitancy in the open surgeries of that time. Then, under his guidance, the Urology Dept. obtained the third or fourth Extracorporeal Lithotripter in the USA. Along with this came a contract with the Veterans Adm.; all the Veterans who needed the Lithotripter service from all the USA and Possessions, came to Iowa City. With this arrangement, totally paid by the Vet. Adm., each Urology resident gathered a lot of knowledge and experience in that novel treatment. Throughout the years l saw Dr Loening several times at AUA’s. He always invited me to Germany, and I invited him to Puerto Rico., these never happened. Nevertheless , I carry with deep gratitute and joy what did happen, Stefan was my Mentor, Maestro y Amigo. Abrazos de Consuelo a su esposa, Vera y a sus hijos y familia extendida.

I was so sorry to hear that dr Loening died. I trained under him at the univ of iowa from 1985-1990. Dr loening was truely a gifted mentor and physician. I cant begin to articulate the impact he had on my career and training. He was never a self promoter but quietly but impactfully innovated the dept of urology during his career. His think outside the box intellect brought a creative gift not only to Iowa but to the field of Urology. He was truely a resident advocate. He never had a cross word for his residents but rather was voice of support on a consistent basis. Title or rank played no role in how he treated you. His family should rightfully be immensely proud of him and the rest of the urology community blessed that he chose urology as his field of study. sincerely , steven wahle md
