Philip Jacob Rink, 79, of Griswold, Iowa died May 9, 2021. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2021 from 11am - 1pm at the Griswold Community Building. Masks are to be worn when greeting the family.

  Private family burial will occur at a later date.

Philip Jacob, son of George and Anna (Redovich) Rink was born March 16, 1942 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He graduated from Don Bosco High School in 1960. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from St. Mary’s University in 1964, Master of Science Degree in Education Administration from Winona State University in 1974, and Education Specialist Degree in Education Administration from Winona State University in 1978.

Throughout his career he was a high school teacher, basketball coach, principal and retired as superintendent in Griswold, Iowa. One of his first teaching jobs was in Peru, South America where he taught high school science and coached high school boys’ basketball. Phil was an advocate for public schools especially in the state of Iowa where he spent most of his career.

On June 16, 1977 he was united in marriage with Candise Bea Nelson in Lake Mills, Iowa. Phil and Candise proudly raised three children, Brian, Sheri, and Meghann. They lived in Lake Mills, Van Meter, and Griswold, Iowa. Phil enjoyed golfing, his Saturday morning card games, watching the Green Bay Packers, and his annual 4th of July trip to Milwaukee.

Phil is survived by his children, Brian Rink of Griswold, Sheri Vierkant of Sumner, and Meghann (Bobby) Vasquez of Missouri Valley, daughter in law, Tracy Rink, of Atlantic and grandchildren, Aidan and Kyra Rink, Hayley Vierkant, Nelson and Hazel Vasquez; his sister, Penny Rink (Fred Toth), brothers Mark Rink and Bob (Suzy) Rink.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son in law, James Vierkant, and sister in law, Mavis Rink.

Memorials may be made to Griswold Dollars for Scholars.
