Allen Dale Barnes

Allen Barnes, 86, of Decorah, died May 27, 2021, at the Wellington Place Care Center in Decorah.  A Military Burial Service was held Thursday, June 3rd at 12 p.m. at The Minnesota Veteran’s State Cemetery in Preston MN.

Allen Dale Barnes was born November 15, 1934 in the hospital at Cresco, IA the son of Lester Earl Barnes and Ella Elizabeth (Naab) Barnes.  The family farmed in Iowa (Fremont Township) south of Harmony MN and had a Harmony address.   In 1946 the family moved east of Decorah by the airport where he lived until 2001 when he purchased a home in Hesper IA.  
Allen graduated from Decorah High School and entered the U.S. Army on July 24th, 1957.  He served as a Private First Class in Germany until April 23, 1959.  He served in the Army Reserve from 1959 to July 23, 1961.  From July 24, 1961 to July 23 1963 Allen served in the Army Inactive Reserve.   

After the military he moved back to the family farm to help his parents and eventually took over the farming operation.  In 2001 Allen retired, sold the farm and moved to Hesper IA.  In 2005 Allen moved to Belfry MT.  He returned to Decorah in 2019 and lived in Decorah until December of 2020 when he became ill and moved to Wellington Place Nursing Home where he went home on May 27th, 2021.

Allen loved to hunt, tell stories and always had time for family and friends.  He was a loyal customer at Fareway, Your Place Bar, Pizza Ranch and The Haymarket.

Survivors include three sisters and a brother: Elizabeth Mostrom of Albert Lea, MN, Eileen Smith of Rochester MN, Kenneth (Yvonne) Barnes of Decorah IA and Dorothy (John) Esse of Ely MN.  Allen had many nieces and nephews that adored him including Patricia (Ray) Kirchmeyer of River Falls WI, Donald (Julie) Barnes of Harmony MN, Peggy (Richard) Erickson of Farmington MN, Dennis (Renee) Barnes of Harmony MN, Douglas Allen (Elizabeth) Barnes of Lincoln NE, Kathy (Linda Rose) Mostrom of Florence AZ, Lori (Mike) Olson of Nicollet MN, Rhonda Lee Barnes of LeRoy MN, Russell Lynn (Jennifer) Barnes of Cleveland MN, Robin Lou (Charles) Barnes-Lutes of Mankato MN, Randall Lane (Stefanie) Barnes of Preston MN, Kristi Bauer of Cresco IA, Lynn (Thomas) Schaefer of Byron MN, Kevin (Carol) Smith of Fleming Island FL, Beth Barnes Guzman of Decorah IA, Darla (Keith) Jones of Decorah IA, Tim (Tia) Esse of Vadnais Heights MN, Tony Esse of Reston VA, and Joan E (Kevin) Wilson of Albuquerque NM.   Allen has 40 Great Nieces and Nephews and 54 Great-Great Nieces and Nephews. 
Allen Barnes was preceded in death by his parents; Lester and Ella Barnes of Decorah; Brothers: Richard Barnes of Harmony; Ronald Barnes of Harmony MN, Brothers and sisters-in-law: Donna Barnes of Harmony; Spencer Mostrom of Albert Lea MN, and Ila Barnes of Rochester MN and Earl Smith of Hudson IA.   Nieces and Nephews: David Barnes, Karen Mostrom; Terry Smith, 3 great nieces/nephews and 1 great-great nephew.
