“Shirley” Theresa Jean Kane

“Shirley”, Theresa Jean Maloney Kane, 85 of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home surrounded by her husband and children on Monday, February 22, 2021. A private service will be held.  Inurnment in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date, where she will be buried alongside her Grandson, Mitch.  Iowa Cremation is in charge of arrangements.

Shirley was born on July 24, 1935 in Fairfax, Iowa to “EJ” Elwood James and Velma (Hasley) Maloney. She is survived by her husband, James Kane, a brother, Tom (Dianne) Maloney, and 3 sisters, MaryLou (Arthur) Van Cleve, Louise (Ray) Larson and Kathy Maloney.  In her first marriage to Charles McEowen she had 6 children: 4 sons, Jeff (Rita) McEowen, Scott (Bridget) McEowen, Andy McEowen, Tim (Robyn) McEowen, and 2 daughters, Lisa (Jack) Novak, Jill (Dean) Johnson.

Shirley has 17 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.  Her unconditional love will be remembered and cherished by all of them. Grandma Shirley was a favorite to all, and she always made them feel like they were her favorite.

Jim brought to the marriage five of his own children, spouses and grandchildren whom Shirley always spoke highly of and adored.

She had a special relationship with us all. Her unconditional love and seeing the good is what we will remember most about her.  Shirley was a selfless, kind, loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.  Shirley’s faith was a guiding light in her life, as she loved so many as God has asked. Shirley was everyone’s biggest fan and she rooted for all, finding time to celebrate the good times and be a source of love and strength in times of struggle.

Shirley graduated from Saint Patrick’s High School in 1953. Shirley held various jobs in banking, education and donated time to Alcohol and drug rehabilitation centers, but of the many accomplishments in her career, the job she took most pride in was taking care of her husband and children.

Shirley was preceded in death by her Parents, “EJ” Elwood James Maloney and Velma Maloney, 2 brothers, Loras Maloney and “Bud” Elwood James Maloney, a sister, Norma Lee (Wayne) Krumbholz, and a grandson whom she adored, Mitchell Johnson.

For Shirley, life’s passion was not a career but rather being a wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister & friend.  She cherished her family and friends, and the good times will be remembered and missed.  A new baby in the family was absolutely the cutest angel she had ever seen.  Her shopping trips, lunches and close girl trips were the best!  She had a special friendship with her sister Louise disappearing occasionally for an afternoon and many of us know where they were.  We hope they have those special places in heaven so she can play her slots! She also loved a wide variety of music, played piano and even made a demo tape.  In our childhood when others had family problems, she offered our home and took in all who needed help.  She was a lifeline to many and provided a safe place when someone needed it the most.  She coined the phrase “Love is Love” far before it took on a life of its own.

Shirley was thrilled when she found new love in a former classmate 20 years ago at a class reunion.  Shirley and Jim fell in love and got married.  They traveled and enjoyed their winters in Florida.  They ventured off to Italy, the Vatican, Hawaii, and much more as they created adventures in this world together. Shirley took care of Jim, and Jim was by her side until her passing.  They had a special love.

Shirley was graceful, kind, loving, compassionate and rooted for all.  In her memory please be those things! Our world certainly is a better place for having her in it.  “Love you to the moon and back”
