DeLores Wright

DeLores Wright, 91, of Cedar Rapids (formerly of Van Horne) passed away Monday, February 1, 2021 at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha.  Private family services will be held at a later date.  Entrusted with the arrangements is Iowa Cremation.

DeLores was born March 18, 1929, the eldest child of Glenn and Myrna (Mason) Dvorak on the family farm in rural Elberon.   Her childhood and youth were filled with the love, laughter, and companionship of her numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, and was very proud of her Bohemian heritage.  She graduated from Toledo High School in 1947.

On August 28, 1949, she married Russell Wright at the Presbyterian Church in Toledo.  They made their home near Van Horne on the farm until 1978, when they moved to town.  DeLores worked for Benton Community Schools for twenty-four years retiring in 1999 as the director of food services.  She was a member of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, in Van Horne.  In 2005, DeLores moved to Cedar Rapids to be closer to her children, later moving to the Meth-Wick Community in 2013.

DeLores loved and cared for pets her entire life, with the most recent being her Persian kitties, Betty and Barney.  She was a talented seamstress, grew and tended beautiful African violets, and enjoyed making chocolate chip cookies.  Russell and DeLores were season ticket holders for the Hawkeye basketball team for over a decade, an activity they truly enjoyed together.  She continued to be a Hawkeye fan to the end.

DeLores is survived by her four children, Kevin and wife Sandy Wright, Terry and wife Irene Wright, D’dree and husband Jim Frizzell, and Drew Wright.  Her six grandchildren also survive her.  They are Kirk (Sharon) Wright, Chad (Lisa) Wright, Jennifer (Andy) Lee, Tiffany (Shane) Jorgensen, Dane (Armida) Wright and Spencer Wright.  She is also survived by eight great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.  Additionally, her sister Glenace Doran and brother Lanny (Suzanne) Dvorak and sister-in-law Goldie Shaffer survive her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell in 2003, her parents, and brothers-in-law Bob Wright, Joe Pieper and Jerry Doran, as well as her sister-in-law Arlene Pieper.
