Dale Vernon Buehler

Dale Vernon Buehler, 91, passed away at his home in West Des Moines on Sept. 20, 2020. Dale was under the care of Unity Point Hospice and his wife Karen was at his side at his passing.

Dale and Karen Buehler moved to West Des Moines from Milford in 2007 to be closer to their sons. Dale and Karen raised their three sons in Sheldon and moved to the Iowa Great Lakes area after their retirement in 1985. While in Sheldon, Dale worked for the Production Credit Association for 21 years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Kiwanis and the Masonic Lodge. Dale was active with the Cub Scouts, serving as treasurer of Pack 154 in Sheldon and as a Webelos leader. He continued to be active with Kiwanis and the Masonic Lodge after moving to Spirit Lake including participating in activities with the Abu Bekr Shriners. Dale enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially his childhood friends from Schaller. He also enjoyed reading, playing cards, watching Iowa State football and basketball, boating and fishing.

Dale was born on Sept. 12, 1929 in Odebolt, the second son of Vernon and Inez (Collenbaugh) Buehler. He grew up on a farm outside of Schaller with his parents, brother and three younger sisters. He first attended country school and later graduated from Schaller High School in 1947. Dale graduated from Iowa State University in 1952, taking one year off from college to serve in the Navy. Dale met Karen Mae Hanna while he was working in Anamosa and they were married there on Feb. 12, 1956. They moved to Schaller where Dale co-owned Buehler-King Implement Company, an International Harvester dealership. The family moved to Sheldon in 1964.

Dale and Karen were married for over 64 years, together they raised three sons, supported each other through individual bouts of cancer, traveled around the country and to Hawaii, Europe and North Africa and made many friends and memories along the way. In addition to Karen, Dale is survived by two sisters; Mary (Melvin) Walton of Hutchinson, Kan. and Florence (Tom) Desmond of Pamona, Calif., three sons; Ross (Elizabeth) Buehler of Kirkwood, Mo., Gary (Debra) Buehler of North Port, Fla. and Brian (Heather) Buehler of Okemos, Mich., and four grandchildren; Sarah Buehler of San Francisco, Calif., Melissa Buehler of Charlotte, NC, and Grady and Calder Buehler of Okemos, Mich.

Preceding Dale in death were his parents, his brother William and his wife Florence, and his sister Marjorie Friedrichsen and her husband Donald.

A service for Dale is not planned at this time. Dale’s family would like to express their sincerest gratitude to Ruth Taylor of Home Instead for her dedication, compassion and care for Dale in his final days. Memorials gifts for Dale can be made to the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation or to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
