Lawrence D. Camp

Lawrence D. Camp, age 92, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 27, 2020.  A progressive man, with a deep compassion for others, planned to gift his body to Des Moines University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences for anatomical studies. Unfortunately, due to current circumstances, this wish could not be fulfilled. He will be interred at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Van Meter, Iowa, in a private family service with military funeral honors. A public celebration of life service will be held at a later date.

Lawrence was the son of Lawrence and Calla (Garbry) Camp, born on January 7, 1928 in Brighton, Iowa. He graduated from Roosevelt High School (Des Moines, Iowa) and entered the military service in 1946. Larry served in the First Calvary Division in Asaka, Japan through 1947 and received an honorable discharge. After he earned a B.S. in business administration from the University of Dubuque, Larry was called back into service during the Korean War. After the war, he earned his law degree from the University of Iowa Law School. He married Janice Park Voss on June 20, 1964. They lived and raised their family in Urbandale, Iowa. He was employed by Aetna & Surety Company for 40 years in the claims department.

Lawrence, known as “Larry” to all his friends, was an active member of the Urbandale Lions Club and the Urbandale Senior Center. He was a long-time member of the Westminister Presbyterian Church and loved to sing in the church choir. He was a loyal Democrat who tolerated and joked with his Republican friends. Larry was a man of exceptional humor and a good dancer. He enjoyed traveling, good movies, great food, and he was an avid lifelong Iowa Hawkeye Fan.  Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.

Larry is survived by his wife of 56 years, Janice; son Randy (Carol) Camp of Newton; daughter Cathy (Joe) Blair of Urbandale; grandchildren Dylan, Katelyn and Natalie Camp, Alyssa and Michael Giampolo, and Jackson Blair; a brother, Gary (Sue) Camp of Rock Island, IL and many other relatives. He was proceeded in death by his parents.

Memorials may be made to Urbandale Lions Club or the Urbandale Senior Center.
