Harry Lester Smith

Harry Lester Smith, 86, formerly of Malcom, died peacefully with his family by his side at his home in Grinnell on November 28, 2020.

Harry was born on September 12, 1934, in Malcom, Iowa, the son of Lester Lowell Smith and Elizabeth Winchell Smith.  He was a 1953 graduate of Malcom High School.

On August 14, 1953, he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Ann Osmond, in Malcom.  With this union of 64 years they raised 9 children.  He was a “dad and grandpa his whole life”.

While living in Malcom he was employed at the Malcom Elevator, Sumner Seed Company and retired after 35 years from Maytag.

Harry loved his family and having them around.  He loved to paint vehicles, was an avid hunter, fisherman and most remembered for the family camping trips with all the kids.  During Harry’s later years he treasured his daily phone calls with his cousins Judy and Jerry, talking to his kids, grandkids and having coffee with the “guys” in Malcom.

He will be greatly missed by his children: James (Paula) Smith of Montezuma, Shirley (Paul) Tines of Gladbrook, Thomas (Kayla) Smith of Victor, Becky (Mitch) Smothers of Malcom, John (Pennie) Smith of Crescent, son-in-law Rick Foster of Gladbrook, 12 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and many other loving family members.  He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ann; son Harry Smith Jr., daughter Kathy Foster and his parents.

In consideration of the pandemic, a future Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date. Memorials may be designated to Malcom Fire Department.   Condolences may be sent to the family in care of Becky Smothers at 210 Montezuma Street, Malcom, IA 50157.
