Alethea Jane Smith Luers

Alethea Jane (Crosslin) Smith Luers passed away peacefully on Mother’s Day 2020 from complications of Alzheimers’s.  She was 79.

Jane was born August 3, 1940 in Shelbyville, Tennessee, the daughter of James Wesley Crosslin and Era Rebecca (Johnson) Crosslin.  She attended Shelbyville Mills Primary Schoool and graduated from Central High School, where she excelled in home economics. Upon completion, Jane became an extraordinary homemaker and attentive mother.  She was a self-taught seamstress, making clothes for herself, her two daughters and their Barbie dolls as well.

Jane and her family moved to southern Iowa in 1968, and she became a widow in 1969, at the age of 28.  She was unted in marriage to Lloyd Luers in 1971.  Jane worked in payroll at Sears Roebuck Co. in Iowa City until approximately 1975.  A move soon after led her to Tuscon, Arizona, where she earned her real estate license.  Upon completion of her license, she invested in properties; “flipping” them, using here skills, especially in the areas of refinishing woodwork and sewing draperies.  Jane returned to Iowa in 1983 with her husband Lloyd and their young son Hal Dietrich.  There, she worked for Washington County School District until she retired.  She continued her work in home restoration, and even helped build two houses along the way.  Jane also enjoyed crochet and made countless baby blankets for family, friends and coworkers.  In her later years, Jane immensely enjoyed putting together elaborate puzzles.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband Charles Avery Smith; second husband Lloyd A Luers; brother Francis Price Crosslin; brother John Lyle Crosslin; sister Blanche Marie Pittman; brother avery Harrison Crosslin; and sister Shirley Thelma McGill.

She is survived by her sister Westelle (Claude deceased) Giles; daughter Dawn (Randy) Kasper; daughter Deana (Dr. Jim Terner); and son Hal Dietrich Luers.  She is also survived by six grandchildren: Brandon (Alicia) Kasper; Melana Kasper; Brenna Starrs; Shannon Starrs; Adria Starrs; and Lena Luers.  She is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Meredith and Owen Kasper, as well as may adoring nieces and nephews.
