He then attended the University of Iowa on a wrestling scholarship, graduating in 1973. Following college he joined the United States Air Force serving in Korea as a navigator on F-4 Phantom planes. He served for 4 years as 1st Lt. before his honorable discharge.

He attended Chiropractic School in San Francisco, CA. and then practiced as a Chiropractor in CA for over 20 years. Upon his retirement, he moved to Arizona where he lived for several years. Duane was a martial arts enthusiast, earning a black belt. He especially enjoyed mentoring youth in the sport.

He returned to Iowa to reside near his family in August of 2018. He enjoyed reconnecting with old friends, extended family, and his childhood church, Living Faith Methodist Church in Montour. He also had many precious and fun times with his sisters.
