Merlin Miller

Denise and Chad. We were so sorry to hear this. Thoughts with you at this time. We all had so many Memories from Afton and were so surprised when we moved to West Liberty to run into your family at CJ. It is those times we will remember.

Our condolences to Denise, Chad & the Miller Family. Your Dad & I go back 50 years. My first teaching job was at East Union (1970). Merlin & I coached the Jr. High Sports. Your dad coached the boys sports, while I had the girls with exception of football which I was his assistant. Being a new teacher & coach, Merlin was my mentor. We spent a lot of time together in Lorimor (Jr. High was there). He taught me how to drive a School Bus which was required if you were a coach. He drove the bus to Creston so I could take the driving test, I passed, had a good teacher! The next year the Jr. High & Sr. High moved into a new building in Afton. Don't remember the year but Merlin & I drove to Maryville, Missouri every Thursday for night classes at Northwest Missouri State University. Merlin became the Athletic Director & we shared a coach's office together. I remember one year for the Sports Awards Banquet, Lola made Ceramic Figurines for every coach. Mine of course was a girl basketball player painted in East Union Colors (I still have it). Merlin was a great man & friend. He was fun to be around & we had many good times at East Union. Merlin was the type of guy that would do anything for you, he would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. I left East Union after 6 years, so didn't see him for a few years until 1979 when Merlin, Lola, Denise, & Chad stopped by our house in Madrid. We had a great visit, Ann & I will always remember / Cherish their visit. Merlin & I had a fantastic visit last fall in Boone, talking about & reliving old times in Afton. Merlin will be greatly missed by many, he touched a lot of lives in his 78 years on this earth. He & Lola are reunited, he told me last fall how much he missed her. RIP Friend! Rich & Ann Knauss

My prayers are with your family at this time. I know how hard it is to give up a dad, but God had his own plan to reunite your parents. Take the trips down memory lane and appreciate the time you had with him (and your mom). Take the time to breathe and grieve. Let me know if you need anything- our prayers and thoughts are already with you.
