Bernie Kracht, Sr.

Bernie Kracht, Sr., 72, of Tripoli, passed away Thursday, February 27, 2020 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home surrounded by his loving family.

Bernie was born on August 22, 1947 to Bert and Priscilla (Veldkamp) Kracht in Rock Rapids, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Linda Wisecup on April 1, 1967 in Evansdale, Iowa. Bernie worked as a truck driver for many years. After retiring from Crouse Cartage Company in 2000, he worked as a welder at Terex. Bernie also worked at Kuethe Turkey Farms. In 2014 he started driving for Tripoli-Readlyn Sanitation and continued there until January of this year.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Linda; daughter Tasha Dontje (Michael Bergman) of Tripoli, IA; son Bernie (Dawn) Kracht, Jr. of Greeley, CO; eight grandchildren: Tyrone and Taylor Kracht; Damian, Lateesha, and Darius Dontje; Joseph, Jaxson, and Willow Bergman; one great grandchild, Maverick Dontje; sister Jean (Chuck) Williams of Dundee, MN; brother Roger (Barbara) Kracht of Luverne, MN; and sister Shirley Patten of Grinnell, IA.

Bernie was preceded in death by his parents and infant grandson, Jacob Dontje.

Bernie will be remembered by his family and friends as a quiet but big-hearted man. One of his greatest joys in life was his family, and he was protective of those he loved. He especially loved spending time with his grandkids. Bernie was hardworking and generous, like the way he planted a huge garden every year and shared his crop with everyone. He had a special knack of taking anything and making it into something. He was humble and honest in all that he did, including in his role as an honorable elder. Bernie endured the many difficulties life brought him with patience, a gracious spirit, and steady spiritual strength. Bernie was kind and gentle without exception; he was always ready to help anyone in need.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 7 at 10am at the Maple Hills Country Club. The burial will follow at Alcock Cemetery. There will be a luncheon at the country club immediately after the burial.

Memorial donations may be directed to the family.
