Joan B. Frein

Joan B. (Pudil) Frein, 85, a life-long resident of Charles City, Iowa died December 12, 2020 at the Floyd County Medical Center.

A funeral mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Charles City and a private family burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Charles City, both at a future date.

Joan Barbara Pudil was born March 26, 1935 in Charles City, the daughter of Leonard and Josephine (Marshick) Pudil. She graduated from Immaculate Conception High School, Charles City, class of 1953 and Mount Mercy College School of Nursing, class of 1956, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. As a registered nurse she was dedicated to her hometown and worked at Cedar Valley Hospital, Floyd County Memorial Hospital, and 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home.

Joan’s proudest accomplishment was raising her two daughters, always engaged in their lives and offering words of encouragement. Years ago, she served her community as a church organist, a member of the Nashua Junior Federated Club, a Girl Scout Leader, and later in life, she assisted with the church prayer line.

At the age of 48 Joan had a massive stroke, her future would forever be changed. After being hospitalized in Rochester, Minnesota for three and a half months, she slowly regained her ability to walk. For years Joan walked with a right leg brace - what a determined, strong woman she was. Years ago when daughter Stacie needed someone to briefly watch her then small children, Joan would drive to Plainfield, Iowa and back to Charles City while driving only with her left foot. In recent years, Joan would say “Those were some of my happiest moments.”

Joan is survived by two daughters, Stefanie (Dr. Brian) Barthel, Orem, Utah and Stacie (Robert) Lindner, Marion, Iowa; five grandsons, Brent Barthel, Jason (Shelby) Barthel, David Lindner, Douglas Lindner, and Kevin Lindner; one great-grandson, Flynn Barthel; Joan’s only sibling, Sue (Dick) Baldwin, Nashua, Iowa; niece, Lisa (Kevin) Molsberry, Algona, Iowa and their children, Rachel Molsberry and Rebecca (fiancé Dr. Austin Marcolina) Molsberry; nephew, Brad (Angie) Baldwin, Nashua, Iowa and their children, Tanner (Sarah) Baldwin and Jamie Baldwin (Jordan Klingman).

She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved feline companion, Pepper Lou.

The family would like to thank Jean Schwarzhoff and Sister Diana Blong for their friendship and assistance through the years. Many thanks to the Floyd County Medical Center for the frequent nurse/family updates on mother, they were very much appreciated. Joan really enjoyed her last home at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home and was grateful for the loving care that she received.

A memorial may be directed to the daughters.

This scripture reminds both daughters of their mother - “I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” (2 Timothy 4:7)
