Richard Herbert Sommer:  1931 – 2020

Bennet, NE – Richard Herbert Sommer, just shy of his 89th birthday, died in Lincoln, NE on August 25, 2020.

Richard (Dick) was born on Sept. 9, 1931 in Carey, Ohio, the youngest child of Harold and LaVerne Sommer.  He served in the US Air Force during the Korean War (stationed in Seoul, Korea), and graduated from Arizona State University.  Dick worked in the cattle business his entire life, living in many states in the Midwest, as well as in California and Arizona, but his favorite place of all was Camp Verde, Arizona.

Dick loved his extensive family, especially when they came to visit, and particularly his devoted dog, Heidi.  He enjoyed old westerns, working puzzles, playing poker, gardening and the annual football rivalry between Iowa and Nebraska.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: Jeff Sommer, Dawn (Galen) Drake, Laurie (Randy) Pittman, and Christopher Sommer, as well as stepsons Jeff (Barb) Brenner and Joel Brenner; 19 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, brother Robert Sommer, and sister Doris Cornett, brother in laws Jay (Nancy) Wood and Mark (Mary) Wood.

Dick was preceded in death by his loving wife Judith, brother Jack Sommer, and stepson Jamie Brenner.

A family graveside service will be held at Jordan Cemetery in West Des Moines, IA at a date yet to be determined.
