Gary Gene Meyer

Gary Gene Meyer passed away April 17, 2020 at Taylor House Hospice after battling cancer. 

 

He was born November 5, 1943 to Gene and Mary Coffman Meyer.  He grew up in Corning, Iowa and graduated from Corning High School.  He received both his bachelor and master’s degrees in Political Science from Iowa State University. 

 

He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War as a Vietnamese interpreter.  He then began his career with the State Office for Planning and Programming and also worked for the City of Des Moines.  He later completed courses to become a CPA, earning the Elijah Watts Award.  He joined the Iowa Department of Management and administered the state school aid formula for many years.  He later worked for the Iowa State Education Association from which he eventually retired.

 

Gary was an avid sports fan, particularly Iowa State football and basketball and St. Louis Cardinals baseball.  He enjoyed biking, reading, and amateur radio.

 

He was preceded in death by his father Gene Meyer and step father Jim Hoffman.  He is survived by his two children, Emily Stephenson (Josh) of West Des Moines and Nick Meyer of Cedar Falls, two grandsons, Jack and Ben Stephenson, his mother Mary Hoffman and two brothers, Dean Meyer and Bill Hoffman.

 

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic no services are planned at this time.
