Roger William Hyatt
Roger William Hyatt Jr, 81, of Clive, IA died on June 23, 2019 from complications from scleroderma and congestive heart failure at the Kavanagh House Hospice facility in Des Moines.
Roger was born in Ottumwa, IA, on October 31, 1938 to Roger Hyatt Sr. and Helen Hyatt (Dexter). He was raised in Ottumwa, IA and had many close friends. He graduated in 1956 from Ottumwa High School. After high school he joined the U.S. Navy, flying on air ships on the east coast and in Cuba, 1956-1959. After his service, he was accepted to the University of Iowa where he majored in math, 1959-1963. While attending school, he met the love of his life, Judith Hyatt (Harper), whom he married in 1963. After graduation, Roger was hired by the National Security Agency and they moved to Bowie, Md, where they raised their children, Lisa, Valerie, and James. Roger and Judy were happily married for almost 54 years, until Judy passed away in June, 2017.
Roger worked many years for NSA, and for five years for the National Institute of Health. He received numerous awards and commendations throughout the years. He retired from federal service in 1993 and moved back to his native Iowa. Roger interrupted his retirement by working for the Iowa Department of Revenue and Finance and Iowa Public Employees Retirement System.
A lifetime of volunteering included coaching for Boys and Girls Club, youth counselor for St. Matthews Methodist Youth Fellowship, working for various committees and groups for Grace United Methodist Church, and serving as a Master Gardener through the Iowa State University extension program, earning the “Outstanding Project Volunteer” in 1997. His passions included a lifetime of sports fandom, cheering on the Baltimore Orioles, Washington, Redskins, and Iowa University Hawkeyes. Roger also enjoyed gardening, birding, political discussion, and charitable giving to many causes close to his heart. He loved his dogs but also had a special place in his heart for cats, often pet sitting for neighbors. Roger is remembered for his generosity and kindness.
Roger is survived by sister Gwen Meadows, his sister-in-law Kay Crose, and children: Lisa, Valerie, and James, along with six grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents Roger and Helen and his wife, Judy.
A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held Saturday, September 14, with visitation at noon and memorial service at 1:00 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church with coffee afterwards. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Grace United Methodist Church.
We would like to thank the staff at Mercy West Lakes and Kavanagh House for their care and compassion.
