Virgil William Getting

Virgil William Getting 96 of Holland, Iowa passed away on October 31, 2018 at Grundy Care Center while in the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. A memorial service will be held Saturday November 10, 2018 at 10:30 am at Colfax Center Presbyterian Church in rural Holland. A memorial gathering will be held prior to the service starting at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Colfax Center Presbyterian Church. 

Virgil William Getting was born May 25, 1922 in Grundy County, Iowa.  He grew up on his family farm with two brothers  Harvey, and Clarence and his sister Ethel. He completed his education through the Iowa rural school program. He married IvaDell Meyer. Shortly after the wedding he was drafted into the army and did basic training in Fort Hood, Texas. IvaDell joined him living off base while he served. After leaving the army he began working at Horbachs furniture store, and later Rath Packing Company where he worked for over thirty years. He  retired from Rath in 1984. In addition to his day job at Rath Virgil and IvaDell had a drapery business that provided draperies to many of the homes from Holland to Waterloo. Virgil and IvaDell had 2 children Jimmy and Ila. 

Virgil loved spending time with his grandchildren when they came to visit. Virgil enjoyed gardening and had a large garden into his 90s. He loved watching the Purple Martins that lived in his Martin houses. Virgil had been a member of Holland Christian Reformed Church for many years. During his years there he was very active in the church serving often as elder. Later Virgil and IvaDell became faithful members of Colfax Center Presbyterian Church. 

Virgil is survived by his daughter Ila (Dale) Wiersma of Zeeland, Michigan; his daughter in-law Brenda Getting of Grundy Center, Iowa; grandchildren Lisa (Joseph) Weyhmiller, of Franklinville, New Jersey; Sarah (Matthew) Gorski, of Allendale, Michigan; Nathan(Tracie) Wiersma, of Wyoming, Michigan; great grandchildren Sierra, Savannah, and Joseph Jr Weyhmiller all of Franklinville, New Jersey; Perrin and Patrick Wiersma of Wyoming, Michigan; brothers and sisters in law Edward Schoolman, Marcella Doak, Doris Kuhlman, AnnaMae Klaassen, and Jake and Wava Hemmen. He was preceded in death by his wife IvaDell Getting, son Jimmy Getting, brothers Harvey, and Clarence, and sister Ethel.
