Mary Ford
Mary Elizabeth Ford, 89, passed away October 20, 2018, at the Guttenberg Hospital. She was born March 24, 1929, in a Montgomery Ward house that was brought by train from Chicago to a small farm by Big Springs, just north of Guttenberg. Her parents were Walter W. Jacobs and Lottie (Aulwes) Jacobs.
She attended a rural school and was horse driven up the Big Springs Hill road behind the Guttenberg Country Club to a District #8 school. She graduated from Guttenberg High School in 1946 and from Jane Lamb School of Nursing in Clinton, Iowa, in 1950. She practiced nursing in Iowa, Illinois, Colorado and Arizona.
Girl Scouting was a happy part of her growing up with the woodland areas filled with wild flowers and birds. She earned 16 badges and many were in nature study. She didn’t mind being called a “bird nut” because she knew how dull the world would be without birds.
She loved traveling to nearly every state in the union, especially New Orleans twice for Mardi Gras and motoring to Alaska 3 times. She loved fishing in the Mississippi River, but the real highlight was catching a 23 pound King Salmon in Alaska.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Ingleside Club, and was a 70 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She was married to Russell F. Ford, and is survived by two sons, Jim (Bernita) and Bill (Debbie); Grandchildren, Kurt (Chelsea), Alicia (Jay) Jacobi, Trevor (Samantha), Brenna, Jacob and Will; 5 Great-grandchildren, Natalie and Declan Ford, Vylah, and identical twins Kovin and Sayer Jacobi. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Jim and sister-in-law Carol Jacobs.
Services will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2018, at the United Methodist Church, 200 S First Street, Guttenberg at 11:00 AM. Short graveside service to follow at Guttenberg City Cemetery.
