Walter B. Hick

Walter B. Hick, age 91, departed this life on May 21, 2018, at Community Care Center in Stuart, Iowa, as a result of a hip fracture.  A memorial service will be held on June 10, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 323 S 2nd St, Stuart, Iowa. His bowling team is now complete in heaven where he is also reunited with his departed coffee shop buddies and many friends and relatives.

Walt was drafted in the Army in 1950, took basic training in Ft. Hood, Texas, then shipped out to Germany after marching in the Mardigras Parade.  Upon discharge in 1952 he went to work as parts man for Wilson International Implement in Stuart until 1975 when he became a full-time farmer.

He was a proud member of American Legion, and enjoyed helping with the activities, especially being cashier at the fish fries and greeting everyone.

Bowling was Walt’s sport and many good times were had going to tournaments with his team.  He won a spot on WHO’s “Lets Go Bowling” program on television and came home with a trophy.  He also enjoyed being a board member of the Conservation Lake and helped with the maintenance of the park.

Walt was married to Joyce Wilson Disney in 1962 and took on the role as “Dad” to the 3 young Disney kids, Jim, Becky and Sherry, who had lost their father, Dick Disney, in a tragic accident in 1959. He was amused when their friends called him “Walt Disney”.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce; children: Jim Disney, Springfield, IL; Rebecca Disney, Boyne Falls, MI; and Sherry Ludwig, Panora, IA; grandchildren: Chasity Heins, Orie Ludwig, Tony Pernicano, Megan Troshak, and Annie Mills; great-grandchildren: Richie Cohenour, Brandon Leslie, Lena Troshak, Luke Mills and Liza Mills; sisters: Darlene Schnobrich and Jean Pike; brother, Joe Hick; brother-in-law, Dick Wilson and sister-in-laws: Norma Hick, Mona Vellinga and Linda Herrick.

He was preceded in death by grandson, John Heins; brother-in-law, Gary Wilson; brother, George Hick and sister, Lola Barker.

Per his request his body has been cremated and a private family burial will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the Stuart American Legion, PO Box 205, Stuart, Iowa, 50250; for the building improvement project.
