Russell Hamilton

Russell W. Hamilton, 87, of Cedar Rapids, passed away on Friday, March 9, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. Per his wishes cremation rites have been accorded and no services will be held at this time.

Russell was born on September 6, 1930; the son of Everett and Dorothy (Dunbar) Hamilton. Russell married his wife (Eunice) in 1951 and was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1952. They settled in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and had three children (Janet, Russ and David). Russell was employed at Collins Radio, Wilson’s Foods and finished his career at St Luke’s Hospital as Director of Financial Systems. After retirement he continued at St Luke’s as a volunteer for an additional 15 years.

Russell loved to hunt, fish and spend time with his family and dogs. He was an outstanding baseball player and even had a tryout with the NY Yankees but was still in the Air Force at the time and could not be immediately available. Russell was flying solo at age 16 before he could drive a car. He had a love for aircraft and flying.

Russell was proceeded in death by his wife, Eunice Hamilton and brother, Neil Hamilton. Left to cherish Russell’s memories are; sister (Joyce), brother (Dennis), his three loving children (Janet, Russ and David), along with 11 grandchildren (Shannon, Gabriel, Russell D., Andrew, Nathan, Derek, Katie, Josh, James, Shelby and Jon) and one great grandchild (Marcus).

The family would also like to thank all the St Luke’s Hospice workers who spent countless hours caring for our father. We would also like to send a special thanks to the family caregivers; Janet, Shannon, Mindy and Gabe who cared for Dad 24/7/365 making it possible for him to remain at home. This was his number one request and his wishes were exceeded every single day because of your attention, dedication, and sacrifice.
