Kenneth Durwood Schoff

Kenneth Durwood Schoff, 88, of Mount Vernon passed away on Friday, March 30, 2018, at home following his battle with cancer.

Kenneth is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Bonita (Bonnie); daughter, Lori Shear of Fulton, IL, and son Lance (Sue) of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Tiffiny, Tanner, Cooper, Samantha and great grandson Drake; two sisters, Beverly (Carl) Achey of Lisbon, and Shirley (Howard) Morehead of Camanche; 27 nieces and nephews; and many other family members and friends.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lydia Schoff; father and mother-in-law, Edward and Edna Forest; and brothers, Wayne, Melvin, and Stanley.

Kenneth was born October 3, 1929 in Lisbon.  He graduated from Lisbon High School in 1946 and was a Staff Sergeant in the Air Force from 1948-1952.  Following his military service he was an electrician and plumber at Schoff Construction in Lisbon.

Ken was a hard worker and always kept busy, taking great pride in growing fruits and vegetables and maintaining a perfect lawn when living on the family’s farm south of Mt. Vernon.  When he wasn’t helping family and friends whenever they had a need Ken enjoyed traveling throughout the US, attending community events in Mt. Vernon and Lisbon, and spending time with his grandkids which he treasured.  In addition, he loved to play cards late into the night with his sisters/brothers and their spouses, educate himself on local and US history, and follow the Hawkeyes, Cyclones, and Mustangs, whatever the sport.  An avid auto enthusiast, Ken also liked to watch sports car races—either on TV or in person at his favorite track, Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Kenneth’s memory may be directed to the Mount Vernon Community Wellness Center fundraising campaign or the Lisbon History Center.  As per his wishes there will be no funeral service.
