Ardith W. Ostrem

Ardith W. Ostrem, 89, formerly of Columbus Junction, died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 in the Memory Care Unit at Green Hills Retirement Community in Ames.  She had been a resident at Green Hills since November 2017.

A memorial service will be held at Columbus Junction United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 17 at 1 PM, with Pastor Melanie Greengo officiating.  Visitation will be held one hour before the service, and over cookies and coffee in the church fellowship hall following the service.  Private burial of her cremated remains will be held at Cambrian Cemetery in rural Columbus City.

Ardith was born February 28, 1929 to Ralph and Dena Orwig Cadwalader in Davenport.  She grew up in Bettendorf, and attended schools in Bettendorf and Davenport.  In 1946, she graduated from Davenport High School and entered the University of Iowa, where she graduated in 1950 with a B.A. degree in literature.

Ardith married Roy E. Ostrem, D.D.S., on March 25, 1950 in Iowa City.  They moved to Columbus Junction in June 1951.  The couple was blessed with children, Laura, Lisa, Kent and Nancy.

Ardith was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Social Sorority; Emma Beckman Chapter of Eastern Star; Half Hour Club; Friends of the Columbus Junction Public Library; and Columbus Junction Methodist Church.  She served as leader of Hopeful Workers 4-H Club for five years.  In 1977, she became Librarian/Director of Columbus Junction Public Library, and served in that position until July 2009.

Ardith is survived by her children Laura Meyer of St. Louis, MO; Nancy (Larry) Wiebel of Ames; and Kent Ostrem of Pinon, NM.  She is also survived by seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Ardith was preceded in death by her husband, Roy, and their daughter, Lisa; her parents; a sister Dena Edith, and brothers Ralph, Grant and Logan.

Memorials may be made to Columbus Junction Methodist Church or to Friends of the Columbus Junction Public Library.
