Ruth Ellen Hamdorf

Ruth Ellen Hamdorf, 87, of Marion, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 11, 2018, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha.  Burial will be private at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Aug. 23, 2018.

Ruth was born on Dec. 4, 1930, in South English, Iowa, to Harry and Mildred Wagamon. She resided at Hilltop Manor in Marion, Iowa, for over 20 years.

Survivors include Ruth’s children, Rex (Mary) Hamdorf of Center Point, and Leslie (John) Etheredge of Chesterfield, Va.; her sister, Dorothy Young of Cedar Rapids; her grandchildren, Michael (Amelia) Hamdorf of Marion and Ryan (Jenn) Hamdorf of Cedar Rapids; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her baby sister, Lois Wagamon; two brothers, Lynn Wagamon and Earl R. Wagamon; and foster sister, Gayle Ewing.

Although almost completely blind, Ruth began pursuing a college degree in her late 40s and graduated cum laude with a bachelor of arts from Mount Mercy College at 55 years of age. Ruth was a former director in the Iowa Council of the United Blind. She first learned line dancing, and then for many years taught it to others. She enjoyed working on jigsaw puzzles and handcrafts. Ruth recently developed a passion for following golf and could talk anything and everything about the sport, although she had never picked up a set of clubs. Ruth’s favorite thing to do, however, was to spend time being with her family.

The family would like to thank the staff at Heritage Nursing & Rehab Center in Cedar Rapids for the care they have provided to Ruth over the past eight months. They also would like to thank everyone at the hospice house who cared for Ruth and all the care and compassion they shared with her family.
