Hazel Ruth Salyers

Hazel Ruth Hallman Salyers was born September 16, 1944, in Cordova, Alabama, to Andrew and Florene (Cosby) Hallman. In 1952, the family moved to Iowa, and Hazel attended school in Linwood, Buffalo, and Bettendorf. She married M. Dean Salyers in Des Moines in 1970.

Hazel passed away at her home in Prairie City on Friday, February 2, 2018. A memorial service will be held at Grace Alive Church, 703 W. 2d St., Prairie City, on Wednesday, February 7, at 2:00 p.m.

Hazel held a variety of jobs in her 73 years. She graduated from Young School of Beauty and worked at salons in Des Moines and also owned her own shop. For several years, she worked for the State of Iowa. She obtained her realtor's license and began selling real estate. She was a trainer for Sambo's Restaurant. She owned and operated Gemcraft in Des Moines. She studied nursing at DMACC, earned her LPN, and was employed by Nurse Force. She enjoyed being a Red Cross volunteer, traveling to many places helping people in their time of need. Hazel and Dean were active members of several different car clubs. She took great care of Dean until his passing in 2013. She loved crafts, sewing, quilting, and her cats. She attended Grace Alive Church, which became very important to her.

Hazel is survived by her children, Daniel (Patty) Salyers and Crystal Griffin; grandchildren, April Vestweber, Lisa (Harry) Brannen, and Michael Brouwer; and 7 great-grandchildren.  She also leaves sisters Nancy (Doug) Harris, Sandra Clancy, Shirley (Phillip) Jones, Donna (Bob) Geigler, and Patricia (Nelson) Bates; one brother, James Edward (Cindy) Hallman; and many nieces and nephews, including her very special niece, Vickie Salyers, who, with her three sons, was by her side throughout her illness and passing.
