Delmar Verle Maxwell
Delmar Verle Maxwell was born in Greenfield, Iowa September 21, 1951 and died in West Des Moines on February 11, 2018 at the age of 66.
He was born to Delmar Keith Maxwell and Ruby Dora Sieldelmann Maxwell and grew up on a farm near Hanging Rock in Redfield, graduating from Dexfield High School in 1969. He earned a degree at Iowa State University and was an avid Cyclone fan till the end. He taught FFA at South Tama, Panorama, and Carroll High Schools.
Del taught students about soil, weeds and crops, animals, ag business/marketing, and used ever-amazing farm safety videos. He took hundreds of students to National FFA Conventions counting the farm ponds all the way to Kansas City and Louisville and judged the livestock barns at the Iowa State Fair for over 25 years. Del coached athletes in softball, volleyball, and basketball kept football statistics, timed track meets, and scored wrestling meets. He performed a memorable appearance as one of the “Blues Brothers” at the half time show of a basketball game.
Del played men’s fastpitch softball for 35 years. The “bologna man” was best known for his mean knuckle ball, his uncanny memory for pitch selections, and his love of sandwiches. He enjoyed time with friends over numerous fishing and skiing trips, bridge and poker games, and raccoon hunting adventures.
Del dearly loved his family. He had fond memories of growing up on the farm with his parents and siblings. Family reunions were always a highlight of his year. He married Deborah Rucker Maxwell on April 2, 1977 in Tama, and they had one daughter. Del spent a lot of time with his granddaughters and sneaked them sweets, drove the “bus,” and cheered them on in sporting and musical activities. He never missed a chance to congratulate great hits, serves, baskets shot, or music well played to the girls and their friends. In this way, he was a grandpa to many.
Survivors include his wife, Deb Maxwell of West Des Moines; daughter Jan (Abel) Zeleke of West Des Moines and granddaughters Jazzy, Zana, and Maya Zeleke; sister Kay Maxwell Gines of Ann Arbor, MI; and many extended relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents Delmar “Keith” and Ruby Maxwell and his brother Albert “Mac” Maxwell. Memorial services will be announced at a later date.
