Chuck (Charles) Smith

Chuck (Charles) Smith 8/25/42 – 12/10/2018.

Well done, good and faithful servant. Dad left this world a better place showing us how to better love and accept everyone.  For Chuck, everyone was a friend.

Dad shared with us these last few months that he was blessed and grateful for such a good life. Even in sickness, he was thankful everyone was together as he and the love of his life celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary (the longest he’d ever been married!).  We are thankful to have shared this life with the greatest husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend anyone could ever wish for.  Thank you, Dad, for sharing your optimism, for seeking the best in others, for kindness, and for teaching us all the meaning of hard work.   His loving family will miss him.

Here are life’s lessons we’ll carry with us always that honor the life of Chuck: play rabbit, travel, go on a cruise, love your “wif,” care for one another, take the scenic route, save the barns, enjoy the journey, wander, stop at the antique shops along the way, listen, the next town has better pop, include the children, go on Ragbrai, find the free samples, be kind, help, play Scrabble, eat bacon, play in the dirt, go fishing, make sure to set your Fantasy Football line-up, commit yourself, wear your Saturday socks, make a wreck, work hard, be honest, family is everything, love each the same, don’t complain--just do it, go to church, laugh at your own jokes, and remember to share stories.  Love, love.

Visitation will be held Thursday, December 13 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, and a Memorial Service will be held Friday, December 14 at 10:30, both at First United Methodist Church, 1202 9th Street, Harlan, IA 51537.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be given to First United Methodist Church of Harlan.  Gifts will be shared between the church and the mission of The Living Last Supper which supports both Jalinga United Methodist Church Orphanage in Nigeria and Shelby County Community Outreach.
