Robert Vonstein

After a long batter with Alzheimer’s, Robert Dean Vonstein died August 13, 2018 in Vinton, Iowa at the age of 86. His son Eric was at his side.

Known by most as Dean or Bob, he was born September 9, 1931 in Adair County, Iowa, the second child to father Walter Vonstein and mother Eleanor Anderson Vonstein. They soon moved to the Bondurant, Iowa are and the family grew to two sisters and three brothers. Dean graduated with Bondurant High School class of 14949. He then farmed with his father. In 1953 he served active duty in the United States Army stationed in Korea until 1955.

After returning to Iowa he attended college at Simpson and Drake receiving a degree in accounting. Dean met Cheryl Ann Haskell during this time and was married December 27, 1959. Dean worked as an internal auditor for Bendix Corporation traveling to various company divisions around the country. Their son Eric was born during this time. In 1964 Dean and family returned to Bondurant where he put down roots, farming with his brothers Lee and Leon. He continued accounting in the winter months providing bookkeeping and tax preparation for several companies and individuals in the Des Moines area.

In 2011 Dean and Cheryl moved to Vinton, Iowa to be close to their son and his family. They enjoyed watching their granddaughters in many activities. On January 6, 2015, Cheryl lost her battle with ovarian cancer. Dean’s Alzheimer’s progressed and he moved to the Vinton Lutheran Home where he enjoyed time with their respectful and loving staff.

Memories of Dean will be cherished by his son Eric (Kris) Howes-Vonstein and two granddaughters Emily and Lucy of Vinton: his sister Jeane Zielinski of Scottsdale, AZ; his brother Leon (JoAnn) Vonstein of Altoona; his brother Lee Vonstein of Creston; his sister Jeri (Homer) Brumley of Warsaw, MO; his brother Steve (Marlys) Vonstein of Bondurant; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dean requested to be cremated and have a celebration service at a later time. The family would especially like to thank the staff at Vinton Lutheran Home and Compasses Hospice for their excellent work and loving care.
