Tim J. Patterson, 69, of Cedar Rapids entered into eternal life on Sept. 3, 2017.
A 10:30 AM memorial mass will be held on Friday, September 15, 2017 at St. James Church in Washington, Iowa, with Fr. Bernie Weir officiating. Visitation will be held starting at 9:00 AM at the church prior to mass. Following the burial of his cremains at Elm Grove Cemetery, a time of food and fellowship will follow in Dallmeyer Hall, at the fairgrounds, 611 Hwy. 1 S,

Timothy Joe Patterson was born 09/05/1947 in Washington, Iowa, the son of J. Kenneth, Jr., and F. Joann (Ross) Patterson.
He attended country school, and then completed his education in the Mid-Prairie district, graduating with the Class of 1966. Long time and special friendships with these classmates were an important part of his life.
He was drafted into the US Army and proudly served in Korea during the Vietnam war. After his military service, he returned to work on the Patterson family farm in Cedar Township.
He married Kathleen M. Sobaski on 08/03/1973. They made their home in rural Washington until 1985, when they moved their family to Kalona and both began long careers as U of Iowa employees. They moved to SW Cedar Rapids in 2000, and to the Meth-Wick Community in 2015.
Tim lived life large…he worked hard and played hard. He was a ‘true original’. No matter what he did, he had a way of going about it that was all his own. He truly enjoyed farming and the years of good times he had with the Syndicate families while his girls were growing up.
He tended the blue grass in his lawn as if it was a cash crop, and loved teaching his grandchildren the wonders to be found in his vegetable garden and around his bird feeders
He was a “meatman” extraordinaire and many enjoyed his delicious roasted whole-hog, homemade sausage, and ‘secret’ BBQ sauce. He butchered everything from goats to turtles for the family table. We trust he is now “fixin’ BBQ” for the Lord!
He made many friends through his community involvement, and truly enjoyed helping others. He had a generous heart.
After declining health forced his retirement in August 2010, he delivered “meals-on-wheels” in Cedar Rapids, and became a volunteer “water-boy” for the Kirkwood College basketball team.
A major act of “giving back” was to loom-knit hundreds of stocking hats for donation to the Salvation Army, and the Hall-Perrine Cancer Center. He made friends easily in the Meth - Wick Community. He loved buying a popper and popping corn for the residents of Deer Ridge.
Tim faced the adversity of his long illness with courage. He never complained about his incurable disease, but instead chose to live each day he was given. He was kind and gracious to all who helped him, and accepted his death with grace and good humor.
He was preceded in death by his parents,
He is survived by his wife Kathy, of Cedar Rapids; daughters, Patricia (Patsy) and husband Rick Halleran and their sons, Caleb and Blake of Fairfax; Polly and husband Tim Forinash and their daughters, Leah and Morgan of Shueyville, his siblings, Mike (Sandy) Patterson of San Francisco, CA., Rob ( Nancy) Patterson, Tom Patterson, and Vickie Patterson, all of Washington.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family or sent via www.amyloidosis.org for research toward a cure for Tim’s rare, devastating bone marrow disease.
