John Falby Stilwell

John Falby (Jack) Stilwell, 78, of Grundy Center, Iowa, died April 2, 2017.  John was born January 4, 1939, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of John Calvin Stilwell and Mary (Regan) Stilwell.  

John spent his childhood in Lake View and Spencer, Iowa. He graduated from Spencer High School in 1957 and joined the Army, serving until 1960.  He then attended State College of Iowa (now UNI) and Gates Business College.  

On August 11, 1962, John was united in marriage to Raarda Smith of Cedar Falls.  They made their home in Cedar Falls and Spencer before moving to Grundy Center in 1969 where John worked as an accountant at a CPA firm and later for Van Wechel Motors, the USDA, and Doug Jordan.  

John was an active member of the United Methodist Church serving as a Trustee and as Treasurer for many years.  He loved life in Grundy Center and was very active in the community, serving as a charter member and President of Kiwanis and the Ambassadors.  He also was active in the American Legion, the Chamber of Commerce, the Park Board, the Center Theater Board, and the Community Center Board.  In recent years, John was a fixture at Manly’s Coffee Club.

John was a Master Gardener who enjoyed gardening, working in his yard, and feeding and watching birds.  He enjoyed many special vacations traveling with Raarda and the family.  He especially enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.  

John is survived by his wife of 54 years, Raarda; his daughter, Annemarie Hamborg (Jon) of Bondurant, Iowa; his son, Douglas Stilwell (Jama) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; five grandchildren, Brenna, Thomas, Sophia, Frances, and Lucille; his sister, Martha Petersen of Houston, Texas; and 2 brothers, Calvin of Sioux Falls, S.D., and David (Sandy) of Loveland, Co. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Richard and Robert.

A visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at the Grundy Center United Methodist Church, where a memorial service will begin at 10:30 a.m.

Memorial gifts may be given to the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Foundation or to Cedar Valley Hospice.
