Sylvia Naomi Poage, 89, of Baxter, IA, passed away Friday, September 2, 2016 at the Acura Health Care Center of Baxter
Sylvia was born on June 27, 1927 in Ottumwa, Iowa to Rev. David and Hazel (Brown) Arnold. She attended several schools, but graduated from New Hampton, Iowa High School. Following graduation she attended University of Dubuque. She was united in marriage to Donald Arthur Poage on April 8, 1947. They made a home together on a farm in Corwith, Iowa, where they raised their five children.
Sylvia was active in the Corwith Methodist Church where she held various jobs. She had a beautiful contralto voice and sang for many occasions. She also served as the choir director for many years. In her later life she worked at the Corwith Public Library for 18 years and enjoyed storytelling. She was also a member of the Corwith Women’s Club. Sylvia enjoyed reading and sewing, but her favorite was being a grandmother.
She is survived by her children Robert (Sheryl) Poage of Lombard, IL, Peggy (Joseph) Dvorak of Colfax, IA, Debra (Thomas) Norton of Frankfort, IL, David Poage and Timothy (Beth) Poage both of Corwith, eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, her parents, her brothers Clem and Edwin Arnold and her sister Shirley Chapman.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 Sept. 12 at the Methodist Church in Corwith with a lunch to follow. The burial service will be 10:00 Sept. 13 at the cemetery in Baxter with a coffee to follow at the Congregational church in Baxter.
Memorials may be made to the Corwith Library or the Methodist church in Corwith.
