Richard Prendergast
Richard H. Prendergast, 84, of Cedar Rapids, passed away suddenly Monday September 19, 2016, at home.
Funeral Mass: 10am Saturday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Hiawatha where friends may visit with the family after 9am. Rev. Mark Ressler will officiate. Iowa Cremation is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Mares (Chris) of Appleton, Wisconsin, and Colleen Prendergast of Cedar Rapids; a son, Dan (Cindy) of Sycamore, Illinois; grandchildren, Colleen and Kevin Mares and Jonathan Taylor and Benji Prendergast. He is also survived by brothers, Lyle of Lowell, Indiana, and Mike (Tracy) of Pataskala, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, a son Doug; brothers Jim, John and Pat.
Dick was born March 14, 1932 in Wolf Point, Montana the son of Edward and Harriet Meyers Prendergast. He married Mary Schmal on September 7, 1957, in Crown Point, Indiana.
Dick served in the US Navy after high school followed by a degree in engineering from Purdue University. He started his career at Westinghouse and then moved his family to Iowa in 1968 to work for Amana Refrigeration where he retired in 1992.
He was a cherished husband, father, relative and friend to many and will be dearly missed. He enjoyed golfing and fishing in his active years and was known for telling a good joke. He was an all-around handy man who put together indoor bleachers for Iowa bowl games as well as an elaborate grow station for his wife, the gardener.
Memorial donations may be directed to Camp Courageous.
