Carol Stoffer
Carol Joyce (Sandberg) Stoffer, 71, passed away Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at her home in Cedar Rapids, IA after a lengthy battle with breast cancer. A private service will be held for family. Iowa Cremation is assisting the family.
Carol was born on September 11, 1945 to Roy David and Edna Florence (Hill) Sandberg in Brainerd, MN. She moved to Centerville, IA when she was nine-years-old and graduated from Centerville High School in 1963. Carol received her associate’s degree from Indian Hills Community College.
On March 20, 1966, Carol married Paul Eugene (Gene) Stoffer in Centerville. The couple moved to Great Falls, MT where Gene was stationed in the Air Force. When Gene was sent to Guam for his Vietnam tour of duty, Carol moved back to Centerville where she worked in her mother’s café, saving her tips for the trip to welcome Gene back home. The trip to California and back to Iowa was a highlight for the couple.
The couple relocated to Corydon, IA where Gene was employed in the family business, Stoffer’s One Stop, and Carol was active in several community organizations and efforts. She was very proud of her work to make the use of infant car seats mandatory in the State of Iowa. During her time in Corydon, she was active in the Legion Auxiliary, Hospital Auxiliary, Wayne Community Booster Club, Beta Sigma Phi, Benton Busy Bees 4-H Club, and P.E.O. Chapter E.U. She worked in the family business before taking on the role of librarian at the Karl LeCompte Memorial Library.
In 1994, Gene and Carol moved to Ankeny, IA where she worked at KFC before taking a managerial position at Majestic Lion Antiques. In 2008, the couple moved to Cedar Rapids, IA to be closer to family.
Carol is survived by her husband of fifty years, Gene, and two children, Janet Stoffer (Mark Stoffer Hunter) and Edward (Julie) Stoffer, six grandchildren, Emma, Isabelle, Elizabeth, Paul, Carolyn, Luke Stoffer, mother-in-law Helen Stoffer, brother-in-law Carl (Sharon) Stoffer, and sister-in-law Jennifer Jill (Stoffer) (Wesley) Belling, and several nieces and nephews. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Roy David Sandberg, Jr., father-in-law Paul Everett Stoffer, and infant nephew.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name may be made to The Karl M. LeCompte Memorial Library, 110 S. Franklin, Corydon, IA 50060 or to The Blesie Tree Foundation, 1951 51st Street NE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52402. This foundation helps cancer patients offset expenses related to fighting cancer.
